EARLY BLOOMERS & LADY BUGS - FIELD TRIP

The Early Bloomers & Lady Bugs, the youth gardeners of the Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club celebrated their last meeting until September by going on a field trip to Rockledge Gardens.  The 10 members attending were excited with anticipation of the butterfly garden, in finding a butterfly egg or a caterpillar or a  pupa.  Theresa made sure they saw all these, plus she identified many of the plants.

Upon arriving at Rockledge Gardens the youth gardeners viewed Rockledge Gardens transportation vehicle - all interested in having a trip around the gardens!!
Miss Louisa & her assistant were ready with snacks for all the youth gardeners before they start their journey & adventure through the gardens!

LIFE-CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY

Butterflies and moths undergo complete metamorphosis in which they go through four different life stages.

  • Egg - A butterfly starts its life as an egg, often laid on a leaf.

  • Larva - The larva (caterpillar) hatches from an egg and eats leaves or flowers almost constantly. The caterpillar molts (loses its old skin) many times as it grows. The caterpillar will increase up to several thousand times in size before pupating.

  • Pupa - It turns into a pupa (chrysalis); this is a resting stage.

  • Adult - A beautiful, flying adult emerges. This adult will continue the cycle.

What a great time we had...all the gardeners thanked Miss Louisa for a wonderful field trip.
