DIRT DAUBERS CIRCLE - FEBRUARY 10, 2009 MEETING

The Dirt Daubers held their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Garden
Center.  We had 31 members attending and one guest.
The main focus of our meeting was a report from our Nominating Committee Chairman, Nelda Renner. All Board Members had been filled with the exception of a President.  No one had volunteered to act as President for the upcoming two years.   Much discussion was had regarding the difficulty of finding someone to act as our President.  After our options were discussed regarding what to do, we had a volunteer from our membership.  Barbara Rathbun agreed to be our President.  Ginny Lambkin-Height would be her Vice President and would fill in for her on the first two meetings of the upcoming year, as Barbara would be out of town at that time.  A big thank you to both of these ladies for stepping up at a time we really needed someone. A vote will be held at our March meeting.
We proudly displayed our plague we had received from the Brevard County Fire Department.  This was presented to us at their quarterly meeting for our donation of money to purchase a tree after their Spring fires this past year.
Dee Fronk gave us information regarding our upcoming day trip to McKee Botanical Gardens and the Oceanographic Institute.  A sign-up sheet was passed around.
Jo Compton, Ways & Means Chairman, brought us up to date regarding our Garden Tour. She
informed us we now have seven homeowners who are interested in making their gardens available.
This tour will be on May 9th and we need total participation from our members to make this a
success.  A sign-up sheet was passed around for volunteers.
Our guest speaker for this meeting was Bob Paty, local nature and photographer, who presented
his program "Wildlife Show & Tell".  Mr. Paty made us all feel pretty human as he had much difficulty
with his computer in the beginning, however, had a great sense of humor and fun was had by all.

the residents and a valentine tree was created with hearts made from everyone.  Following members
assisted Judy with this visit - June Saathoff, Shirley Perez and her friend Pat, Fleeta Lindley, Pat
Mullen and Dee Chandler, who was the photographer for the day.  Anne Schwanda also helped
Judy make the ribbon bows for the arrangements that were created.  Thanks to these special
Dirt Dauber members for a very special event.

The Brevard County Fire Rescue awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to the Cocoa Rockledge Dirt Daubers Circle for their contribution toward the planting of a tree and shrubbery at their Palm Bay Station.  The Dirt Daubers assisted with the costs of these plantings after the wildfire devastation in their area this past Spring.  Appreciation is extended to the Port Malabar Garden Club for their assistance with coordinating our donation and the actual selection and planting of the shrubbery.
It was a pleasure to be a part of making Station 89 a little more comfortable for our brave firefighters.

THE DIRT DAUBERS CIRCLE WORKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

NOVEMBER 24,  2008

The Dirt Daubers Circle contributed funds toward the purchase of the Oak Tree planted at the Fire Rescue Building in Port Malabar.  FFGC, FFGC District VI, clubs & circles through out District VI  contributed funds to be used toward  the planting of the tree & shrubs, and help with the recovery of this community after the fires in May.  The Garden Club of Port Malabar was responsible for overseeing this project and KUDOS to the club for a job well done!  The Fire Rescue Building was completely destroyed by these fires, a modular building has been set-up on the property, & the plantings at the back of the building will help to buffer the noise from Bayside High School which joins the property.

DIRT DAUBERS CIRCLE

NOVEMBER 11, 2008 MEETING

The Dirt Daubers' November 11th meeting was held at the Historic Derby Street Chapel, in Cocoa Village, with approximately 24 members attending.  The Chapel built in 1916 by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, it was sold to the Church of Christ Scientists in 1956, which sold it to the First Baptist Church in 1964.  For years, it was used for church services, prayer meetings, children and youth activities, and distribution center for food and clothing for the needy.  After the Baptist church built a new activities center, the charming little chapel became a storage room and fell into disrepair.  About 8 or 9 years ago, they decided to tear it down and build a parking lot.  When saws and hammers began ripping into the flooring, the man who lived next door to the chapel protested the destruction of a historic building.

A few women in the Church took up the torch and began the arduous task to save the Chapel, and contacted the Division of Historical Resources at the Florida Department of State ... after the evaluation of the Chapel in their opinion, there is no other Chapel in Florida exactly like this one.  It is truly a treasure.  In July 2003, the First Baptist church leased the property for 25 years to Cocoa Main Street to restore the Derby Street Chapel and operate it for community activities.

The Dirt Daubers involvement began in 2003 after Cocoa Main Street voted to approve the landscaping project.  The project at the Chapel is now complete, and  the landscaping marker placed in the garden. The Dirt Dauber Circle was present Beautification Awards from The City of Cocoa & Keep Brevard Beautiful for this landscaping project.

Anne Schwanda gave a Veteran's Tribute in honor of all Veterans and many Dirt Dauber members were planning on attending Massing of The Colors at Brevard County College to celebrate  Veterans' Day.

After a very productive meeting, most of the members attending enjoyed lunch at Cara Mia's Riverfront Dining in Historic Cocoa Village.

SEPTEMBER 9, 2008 MEETING/INDOOR PICNIC

(CLICK HERE TO VIEW INDOOR PICNIC SLIDESHOW)

Members of the Dirt Daubers Circle gather to celebrate the beginning of another garden club year with enthusiasm & new ideas.  What a unique way to begin another garden club year, the hostesses had planned an "Indoor Picnic," all the ladies were wearing hats...and what lovely hats & great food!  Thanks to the Hostess Committee:  Laura Ginn, Nelda Renner, Dorrie Dykstra, Sue Oliver, Joan Fagan, & Fleeta Lindley.

From the desk of President McGhee: The Dirt Daubers had their first meeting of the year at the club house on Tuesday, September 10 at 9:30 am.  We had 37 members, 1 guest and 2 new members attending our "picnic social".  Everyone brought their special salad or dessert and wow did we have some good food.  It was the norm to see several of us going through the food line more than once.  The highlight of the morning was the parade of hats.  So many fancy, and some hilarious, hats were worn by our lovely ladies.   Thanks to Laura Ginn, Chairman, and her hostess committee for a great day. In our business meeting, we discussed plans for the upcoming year.  We voted to send $150.00 to the Port Malabar Garden Club to purchase a tree for the fire rescue house that was burned.  We also plan to purchase a few more plants for the Derby Street Chapel.  Some members felt the shrubbery was a little too sparse or too small.
Everyone was reminded to get all their donations ready for our rummage sale.  Also to groom their plants for the plant sale.  Would be nice if you could identify your plants for us.  Our house chairman will be meeting with her committee to make our recommendation to the CRGC regarding our choices of colors and other decorating ideas.

Dirt Daubers are eager and ready to get started with our new year.  We are tossing around several projects we wish to become involved with and we are gathering information now to see what we can do.

OBSERVES - NATIONAL GARDEN WEEK - JUNE 1-7, 2008

Several Dirt Daubers met at the Garden Club on Tuesday to make bouquets for several municipal offices to
celebrate  National Garden Club Week.   Even though we had a little bump in the road (the florist forgot to
order our flowers) we made do with what we had and made eight beautiful arrangements.  They were delivered to two libraries, two City Halls, two nursing homes, and two police stations.  We attached a card to each arrangement stating the Dirt Daubers were recognizing them and that we thanked them for all they do.  Everyone was very appreciative.
I might add that our Florida Governor Crist, the City of Cocoa and the City of Rockledge proclaimed this as
National Garden Club Week.
Fun was had by all and we would like to think we made the day happier for the people receiving our gifts.
